To fulfill this demand, the organization that oversees the generic domain extensions, ICANN, launched the .MOBI extension in 2005. The first registrations were started in September 2006, and the intention behind this domain extension is that all websites that use it should comply with specific restrictions. In other words, all dot MOBI websites should be designed to be viewed without problems by mobile devices in agreement with the so-called “MWI Best Practices for mobile content” formulated by the W3C Mobile Web Initiative (MWI) in collaboration with the .MOBI Registry organization. These have to do with how a web page is being navigated, the way it is being displayed (form and size), and so on.

The restrictions have raised some questions taking into account that the generic TLD is the only one that specifies what devices must be able to access a website and the way in which this should happen, breaking the so-called principles of device independence, according to which a site should be created in such a way as to be viewed by the majority of Internet browsers and devices, be they mobile or stationary.
